Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye disease affects over 30% of all people in Canada and can cause significant discomfort. The following people are most likely to experience dry eyes:
- Women
- People over 50
- People taking certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and SSRIs)
- People with Hepatitis C
- People with Vitamin A deficiency
- People with androgen insufficiency
- People with specific vascular diseases
- People who have had the following medical procedures:
- Radiation therapy
- Postmenopausal estrogen treatments
- Some types of stem cell treatment
- Corneal surgery
Our practice offers numerous medications and therapies for patients with dry eyes, including I-DROP artificial tears and Ocunox hydrating ointment. Once we determine the cause of your dry eyes, our doctors can recommend an appropriate method for managing your symptoms.
Eye Disease Diagnosis & Management
Eye diseases threaten the sight of over 5.5 million Canadians. Early diagnosis can be instrumental in delaying or preventing permanent blindness in many of these cases. Regular comprehensive eye exams give your eye doctor a chance to detect and take action against these diseases before they cause severe problems.
We test for numerous eye diseases and conditions during each eye exam, including:
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Conjunctivitis
- Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
- Diabetic eye diseases (such as diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy)
If we detect any diseases or conditions during your exam, your optometrist will create a personalized treatment plan to manage your condition effectively. Some diseases (such as cataracts) can be treated surgically, while others require ongoing monitoring and management.
Emergency Eye Care
An eye emergency is anything that presents an urgent risk to your vision or ocular health. Eye emergencies can occur when you:
- Suffer an impact to the face or head
- Have a severe allergic reaction
- Are exposed to chemicals
- Suffer a puncture wound or an abrasion
- Get a foreign object stuck in one or both eyes
Eye emergencies can also occur in other cases. An eye emergency may cause complete or partial vision loss, vertigo, headaches, other kinds of pain, severe inflammation, and floaters or flashes across your field of vision.
If you don’t know whether you’re having an eye emergency, it’s safer to assume that you are—and seek help from your eye doctor as soon as possible. Contact us for assistance or go to the nearest emergency room if we’re not available.
Eye Nutrition
Diet and nutrition play a vital role in maintaining strong vision and healthy eyes. Research suggests that some nutrients may reduce the risk of developing certain eye conditions:
- Lutein & Zeaxanthin: these nutrients are commonly found in leafy green vegetables and have anti-inflammatory properties. They may even help improve cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
- Vitamins C and E: found in many fruits and vegetables, these vitamins can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration when part of a healthy diet.
- Essential fatty acids: specific essential fatty acids, such as Omega-3s, may have benefits for the retina. Omega-3s are commonly found in foods like fish and eggs.
- Zinc: Zinc plays an important role in normal ocular function. Zinc can be found in oysters, red meat, and poultry products.
Contact our clinic and book an appointment to learn more about an eye-friendly diet. You can also buy our Dry Eye Package by visiting our online store! This package contains lid wipes, eye drops, a hot compress mask, and extra strength Omega 3 supplements for healthy, hydrated eyes.
Low Vision
Low vision is vision that cannot be improved through the use of corrective lenses or surgery. People with low vision may have a hard time performing daily tasks—driving, watching TV, visiting with friends, or even reading and writing might be difficult.
There are varieties and varying degrees of low vision. Some people with low vision find that their peripheral vision is impacted, while others have more loss in their central vision or experience low vision at night.
Age-related macular degeneration, genetics, cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye conditions can all cause low vision. Every pair of eyes is unique and the causes and severity of low vision will differ from person to person. As such, rehabilitation requires a customized approach, tailored to each individual patient.
Magnifiers and other assistive technology are also available to help improve patient’s quality of life. A comprehensive eye exam can detect low vision and at Sea to Sky Optometry, we can provide a personalized therapy regimen.

Sea to Sky Optometry was great! Everyone was friendly and nice and I walked away with a great pair of glasses and my new prescription. As someone from Lillooet, I only hope that they open up an office here too! Pemberton, you’re lucky to have such a great optometrist!

Going to visit Dr. Mindy Blumberg and her team at Sea To Sky Optometry is an incredible experience, from start to finish. Mindy is highly knowledgeable and will teach you more about your eyes in one visit, than you’ve likely learned in your lifetime. I would highly recommend booking in to see her.
